[Verse 1]
Am F/A Am C G/B G
Twelve men broke loose in seventythree
Am F/A Am C G/B G
  From Mill Haven maximum security
Am F/A
  Twelve pictures lined up
Am C G/B G
  across the front page
Am F/A Am C G/B G
Seems the Mounties had a summertime war to wage
Am F/A Am C G/B G
The chief told the people they had nothing to fear
Am
  Said,
                        F/A Am C G/B G
"The last thing they wanna do is hang around here"
Am F/A Am C G/B G
They mostly came from towns with long French names
Am F/A Am C G/B G
But one of the dozen was a hometown shame

[Chorus]
C G/B
 Same pattern on the table,
G Am
 same clock on the wall
C G/B
 Been one seat empty,
    G Am
eighteen years in all
C G/B G Am
Freezing slow time, away from the world
C D
 He's thirtyeight years old,
Am
  never kissed a girl
C D
 He's thirtyeight years old,
Am C D

[Verse 2]
Am F/A
We were sitting around the table,
     Am C G/B G
heard the telephone ring
Am F/A Am C G/B G
Father said he'd tell 'em if he saw anything
Am F/A
Heard the tap on the window
Am C G/B G
in the middle of the night
Am F/A Am C G/B G
Held back the curtains for my older brother Mike
Am D
See my sister got raped so a man got killed
C
 Local boy went to prison,
      D
man's buried on the hill
Am D
Folks went back to normal when they closed the case
C D
They still stare at their shoes when they pass our place

Am F/A
  Over her shoulder
Am C G/B G
  on the squad car megaphone
Am F/A
  Said, "Let's go Michael, son,
Am C G/B G
  we're taking you home"
