I Shot The Sheriff

[Chorus]
Gm
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I did not shoot the deputy
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I did not shoot the deputy

[Verse 1]
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
All around in my home town
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
They're trying to track me down
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
They say they want to bring me in guilty
        Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
For the killing of a deputy
        Bb/Eb Dm7
For the life of a deputy
Gm Gm
  But I say

[Chorus]
Gm
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I swear it was in selfdefense
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
and they say it is a capital offense

[Verse 2]
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
Sheriff John Brown always hated me
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
     For what I don't know
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
Every time that I plant a seed
   Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
He said, "Kill it before it grows"
   Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
He said, "Kill it before it grows"
     Gm
I say

[Chorus]
Gm
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I swear it was in selfdefense
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I swear it was in selfdefense

[Verse 3]
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
Freedom came my way one day
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
And I started out of town
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
All of a sudden I see sheriff John Brown
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
      Aiming to shoot me down
     Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
So I shot, I shot him down
  Gm
I say

[Chorus]
Gm
  I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I did not shoot the deputy
I shot the sheriff,
Cm Gm
but I did not shoot the deputy

[Verse 4]
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
Reflexes got the better of me
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
And what is to be must be
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
Every day the bucket goes to the well
Bb/Eb Dm7 Gm
But one day the bottom will drop out
Bb/Eb
     Yes,
       Dm7 Gm
one day the bottom will drop out
      Gm
But I say

[Chorus]
Gm Cm Gm
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh,
no
                   Cm Gm
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh,
no
