Helplessness Blues

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
      D
I was raised up believing
      G/D
I was somehow unique
       Dmaj7
Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes
 G/D D
Unique in each way you'd conceive
And now after some thinking
        G/D
I'd say I'd rather be
  Dmaj7
A functioning cog in some great machinery
G/D D
Serving something beyond me

[Chorus 1]
      D
But I don't,
                            G
I don't know what that will be
         D G/D D G/D
I'll get back to you someday soon,
         D
you will see

[Verse 2]
          D
What's my name? What's my station?
         G/D
Oh, just tell me what I should do
        Dmaj7
I don't need to be kind to the armies of night
           G/D D
That would do such injustice to you
Or bow down and be grateful
         G/D
And say, "Sure, take all that you see"
       Dmaj7
To the men who move only in dimly lit halls
      G/D D
And determine my future for me

[Chorus 2]
      D G
And I don't, I don't know who to believe
         D G/D D G/D
I'll get back to you someday soon,
         D
you will see

[Verse 3]
     D
If I know only one thing
          G/D
It's that everything that I see
       Dmaj7
Of the world outside is so inconceivable
G/D D
Often, I barely can speak
Yeah, I'm tongue-tied and dizzy
      G/D
And I can't keep it to myself
     Dmaj7
What good is it to sing helplessness blues?
           G/D D
Why should I wait for anyone else?

[Chorus 3]
      D
And I know,
                               G
I know you will keep me on the shelf
          D G/D D G/D D
I'll come back to you someday soon myself

[Outro]
              G6/D
If I had an orchard,
    D G6/D
I'd work till I'm raw
    D
If I had an orchard,
    D D/E D/F# G
I'd work till I'm sore
    D/F# D5 G D/E G D/F# D G/D
And you would wait tables and soon run the store
     D G6/D
Gold hair in the sunlight,
   D G6/D
my light in the dawn
    D
If I had an orchard,
    D D/E D/F# G
I'd work till I'm sore
    D/F# D5 G D/E G
If I had an or___chard,
D/F# D G/D
I'd work till I'm sore
   D G6/D
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
   D G6/D
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
   D
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
D D/E D/F# G
Oh-oh-oh__oh
D/F# D5 G D/E G D/F# D G/D Csus2 D5
Someday I'll be like the man on the screen
