Three important rules for breaking up

[Verse 1]
Cmaj7
Don't put off breaking up when you know you want to
B5 Em
Prolonging the situation only makes it worse
Cmaj7
     Tell him honestly, simply, kindly,
    B5
but firmly
             Em
Don't make a big production
              Cmaj7
Don't make up an elaborate story
                                    B5
This will help you avoid a big tear jerking scene
       Em F#dim/C
If you want to date other people say so
                                           B5
Be prepared for the boy to feel hurt and rejected
Even if you've gone together for only a short time
Cmaj7
     And haven't been too serious
                        B5
There's still a feeling of rejection
                      Em
When someone says she prefers the company of others
Cmaj7
To your exclusive company
But if you're honest, and direct
B5 Em
And avoid making a flowery emotional speech
         Cmaj7
When you break the news
The boy will respect you for your frankness
B5 Em
And honestly he'll appreciate the kind and
                F#dim/C
Straightforward manner in which you told him your decision
                   B5
Unless he's a real jerk or a cry baby you'll remain friends
                     Am
I'm head of the class

[Chorus]
           G
I'm popular
                 Am
I'm a quarterback
           G
I'm popular
                       Am
My mom says I'm a catch

[Verse 2]
Cmaj7 B5
Being attractive is the most important thing there is
Em Cmaj7
If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond
                                     B5
You have to be as attractive as possible
                       Em
Make sure to keep your hair spotless and clean
Cmaj7
Wash it at least every two weeks
    B5
Once every two weeks
       Em F#dim/C
And if you see Johnny Football Hero in the hall
Tell him he played a great game
         B5
Tell him you liked his article in the newspaper
                  Am
I'm the party star

[Chorus]
           G
I'm popular
                   Am
I've got my own car
           G

[Verse 3]
Cmaj7 B5 Em
I propose we support a one month limit on going steady
Cmaj7 B5
I think It would keep people more able to deal with
                Em
weird situations
And get to know more people
Cmaj7
I think if you're ready to go out with Johnny
B5 Em
Now's the time to tell him about your one month limit
F#dim/C
He won't mind,
he'll appreciate your fresh look on dating
B5
And once you've dated someone else,
                  Cmaj7
you can date him again
I'm sure he'll like it
                   B5 Em
Everyone will appreciate it You're so novel,
what a good idea
Cmaj7
You can keep your time to yourself
                    B5
You don't need date insurance
           Em
You can go out with whoever you want to
Cmaj7
     Every boy,
                 B5 Em
every boy in the whole world could be yours
                  F#dim/C
If you'll just listen to my plan
